CLASSIC MATCHES

As part of the Department of Wrestling's mission to maintain kayfabe and defend reality wherever it is threatened in an increasingly complex world, we are proud to present an ongoing series of photos highlighting classic matches featuring famous and not-so-famous wrestlers and promotions from throughout professional wrestling's long and glorious history.

Mad Dog Malone vs Duke Riveter

1979

Mad Dog Malone facing off against Duke Riveter for the vacant Steel City Belt at the sadly now demolished Velocity Center, the suburban Pittsburgh (Almono PA to be exact) base of operations for Union Pro Wrestling in the 70s and 80s (not to be confused with the Japanese promotion of the same name that existed in the 2000s).

Boris "The Hammer" Kravchenko

1981

Boris "The Hammer" Kravchenko, backstage at the Lenin Victory Palace moments before competing in the 1981 Moscow Grand Wrestling Championship. The tournament was held every four years in the nation's capital, and was sanctioned by Moscow Championship Wrestling (MCW), the USSR's premier wrestling promotion.

El Hombre Lobo vs Lexa Torque

1965

An amazing photo from February of 1965 of El Hombre Lobo as he prepares to defend his World Warrior Wrestling Western Range Title against Lexa Torque in a best-of-3 falls match at the Sunset Colosseum in Sierra Hollow, Utah. Lobo would drop the first fall on a controversial quick-count pinfall, but would rally to triumph with two consecutive submissions.

The Ozark Howler vs Thunderclap Malone

1962

An rare image from a training session as the two wrestlers prepared to compete in the Continental Clash '62 tournament. The Clash was the premiere event staged annually by the National Ring Federation (NRF) for the coveted Pioneer Wrestling Trophy. CC'62 was held at the Victory Forum in Snowpine, Alberta, with the Howler winning his second consecutive PWT over a field of all-star competitors including Bigfoot Benson, Phantom Joe Fargo, and The Chupacabra Kid. Malone would win the tourney in 64.

The Turbo Triplets

1952

The infamous trio engaging in their customary pre-match ritual before winning the PWA Heartland Tag Team Titles in 1952 at the famed Neon Palace in Ridgefield, Nebraska.

This was of course before the Trips were captured by anti-kayfabe terrorists and reprogrammed to destroy humanity.

Vinnie "The Viper" Vipowitz vs Grapple-Bot Mk VII

1978

The two titans collided for the GAWL

Coastal Cruiserweight Title at the Summit Dome in Ashhaven, PA.

Sledgehammer Samson vs Bigfoot

1967

A rare photo from the classic 1967 bout between Sledgehammer Samson and Bigfoot at the International Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Punchinello vs Diablo Kid vs Deuce Wilson

1947

A triple-threat-match for the then-vacant Transcontinental Championship. The match was held at Casa Del Dolor in Tijuana, and infamously ended in a triple disqualification after all three men attacked each other with knives. The Diablo Kid would go on to win the belt later that year.

Iron Fist Jackson vs Kill-O-Tron 5000

1975

Held at the East-South Arena in Bowling Green. The unique "white-white-red" rope scheme was part of a special promotion being run by a local Burger Chef franchise.
